Priesthood Ordination Fr.
Gioberty Calle, OSA Our Augustinian Vicariate of St. John of Sahagun, has the great joy of sharing with all our family, friends and benefactors, our great joy on the occasion of the priesthood ordination of our brother Gioberty Calle. Bishops John McNabb and Daniel Turley presided at the celebration by which Gioberty gave of himself totally to the service of the Church. The ordination ceremony took place in the Holy Family Cathedral in Chulucanas, the main city of the dioceses. The large cathedral was filled with people since Gioberty was working in the neighboring Augustinian parish of San José Obrero (St Joseph the Worker) for the last year. Thus he was well known among the faithful of that parish and great numbers came out to join him for this special occasion. |
|
| During the ceremony we felt very united to Gioberty and his
family which had come a great distance to be able to join in the day. There were
moments of great joy and enthusiastic response by the people in the songs and gestures
during the mass. The homily pronounced by Bishop McNabb underscored the importance of each baptized person to the service of the Church, and the special obligation of those called to priesthood to be messengers of the Good News of the Gospel. |
Two
important people in the vocation of Gioberty, Fr. Art Purcaro, OSA and Sr. Pat Mulderick,
RSM accompany him during the signing of the litany of saints. |
|
| Very special moments were experienced when in the offertory
procession four young members of the youth group that Gioberty accompanies, danced up the
aisle in a typical folkloric dance of the mountains, to present the gifts of bread and
wine. At the end of the mass one of Gioberty's smallest nephews got up and recited a
poem written especially for the event. Recital of poems is another traditional even
of the mountain towns in northern Peru. As the mass came to a close, Fr. John Lydon, OSA, in the name of the Augustinians in Peru expressed thanks to the two bishops, to those responsible for Gioberty's formation, and particularly to his family and friends to help bring this day about through the grace of God. Gioberty then rose to express his thanks and share the deep emotional meaning of this day and his firm hope to be faithful to the expectations of all those gathered to support him. |

| Gioberty stayed at the altar as the rest of the procession left the cathedral where he greeted family and friends who asked for his first blessing. Finally about 400 invited guests made their way to Villa Nazaret where a lunch was offered. Gioberty's family, moved with great joy in their hearts, also entertained with many songs and dances typical of Peru. | Gioberty receives the chalice

His first mass in his native town of Pacaipampa was
celebrated on Aug. 22nd in the parish church of the Virgin of the Assumption. Our brother Gioberty, was born and raised in the small mountain town of Pacaipampa. After finishing secondary school there he studied in Lima a year and then decided to continue to follow the call that the Lord gave him to the priesthood. He participated in the one year program of initial formation in Santo Domingo, a small town in the mountains, then went on to studies for priesthood in the seminary of Trujillo. As a candidate for the diocesan priesthood he finished his philosophy studies, then decided to enter religious life with the Augustinians, the community that serves in his native town. After making his novitiate in Brazil, he returned to finish his theology studies in Trujillo. |
