The El Niņo Phenomenon
Relief Efforts

comedor.jpg (22501 bytes) With the great amount of destruction and the large number of families affected the Church had to first respond with basic elementary relief.  Food kitchens were set up in different parts of the parishes.  Simple meals were prepared by volunteers (pictured here) and distrubuted to those who lost everything.
Children are always the most vulnerable victims in a natural disaster.   Special attention was paid to reach them with something to eat each day.   However, because of the large number of adversely affected families and limited resources, many still did not have something to eat each day. niņos.jpg (25723 bytes)
Basic fuel supplies could not reach the villages because of the destroyed bridges.  So people took the barrels, half full of fuel so that they would float, across the surging rivers by hand. petroleo.jpg (9736 bytes)
viveres_rio.jpg (16542 bytes) With bridges fallen, relief efforts had to go across the swollen rivers in small boats.  Basic food supplies of rice, wheat, cooking oil and other necessities are sent into the most needy areas in order to set up "comedores populares" (family food kitchens)
