Mass of Thanksgiving for the Service of Fr. Jack Dowling, OSA
Parish of Our Lady of Monsterrat, Trujillo

On Sunday March 2, the parish community of Our Lady of Montserrat, situated in the city of Trujillo, Peru, offered their profound thanks to Fr. Jack Dowling, OSA, who was pastor of the parish for the last eight years.  The church was filled to overflowing capacity, a gesture that underscored the great esteem that the people have for Fr. Dowling during these years of service.

The gospel of this Sunday was the healing of the blind man by Jesus, and members of the parish "acted out" the various parts of the gospel to better highlight its significance.  Following the gospel, Fr. Jack gave some words of thanks to all the parish members for the constant help and sacrifice that members of the parish showered upon him in these years.

In the procession of gifts, a small photo album with many memories of his 8 years, was presented to him on behalf of the parish team. Following communion it was time for others to express their thanks.  Fr. John Lydon, in name of the Augustinians in Peru, expressed thanks to Fr. Jack for his many years of continual service to the people of the parish.  This was followed by president of the parish team, Socorro, who expressed the gratitude of all towards Fr. Jack pointing out how he promoted greater appreciation for the word of God, promoting the birth of the basic ecclesial communities in the parish.  Afterwards members of the different parish groups and the zones which comprise the parish, presented him with many different gifts to serve as a reminder of his years in Montserrat.

The day ended with a toast and some sandwiches prepared by the different parish zones and shared among the 500 people who filled the church.

Fr. Jack will be going to the new community that the Vicariate has opened in Pacasmayo, about 2 hours north of Trujillo.
