Walking Against Hunger

One of the goals set by world leaders in the Millennium Summit at the United Nations in 2000 was to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2015 (see the Millennium Goals).  Since this is only possible if there is the political will to reach the goal, the UN World Food Program organizes each year a Walk against Hunger to underscore the need to insist upon world leaders to attend to this urgent need of justice.  The date of the walk varies each year and some local conditions mean adjusting the date to promote greater participation.  This year the community of Trujillo made is annual participation in the march on Sunday May 18th.

Starting out after the 8am mass in the three chapels where we attend (Montserrat, Santa Maria and San Nicolas de Tolentino), the three groups of people united near a local university and walked to the main plaza of the city with signs meant to awaken interest and concern in the local population and thus in the political leaders.

Local television stations interviewed the marchers along the route and in the main square one representative of each of the chapels gave a short reflection to animate the group into working continually for the aim of eliminating world hunger.
