Christmas Sharing Brings on Smiles

In preparation for the feast of Christmas, the parish in Trujillo organizes a small “fiesta” to celebrate with the poorest sections of the parish.  The number of children, who literally receive nothing on Christmas day because of the poverty of their families, always moves to action a large number of people whose economic situation is a little more fortunate and so in each area we are able to ensure that all the children receive one Christmas gift.  The event begins with some group games and dynamics and the singing of some of the favorite Christmas Carols.  Then the group is divided into two lines, boys in one line, and girls in the other.  Generally the girls receive a gift of a doll and the boys a toy truck or motorcycle.

Once the toy in handed out there is the second part of the celebration which is a cup of hot chocolate.  This is the one day of the year were Peruvian tradition dictates that everyone should at least get some hot chocolate. With the chocolate comes a small sweet bread (paneton), filled with raisins and some dried fruit.  It is a once in a year treat that the children devour with great enthusiasm.

There are five sections of the parish that are in the poorest areas and in all over 1,000 children receive gifts and the hot chocolate.  Here we present pictures of two of these areas, the zone of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, en la El Sol section of Trujillo and the zone of St. Augustine in the outskirts called El Puente (“Bridge”), since it is near a bridge that goes over the Moche river.  In the El Puente zone balloons were also handed out as an extra treat for the children.
